Just because you want to be rid of something, doesn’t mean you can just toss it in a dumpster or trash bin and walk away. It’s the rare municipality that doesn’t have restrictions on what waste can be processed through their landfills, and many have few hesitations about levying heavy fines against those who treat waste regulations lightly. Before you make a costly mistake of tossing out something that isn’t welcome, educate yourself about what can be tossed in a rented dumpster.

Take care when disposing of the following:

  • Electronics – Computer processors and monitors, TVs, and other electronics are now banned from many state’s landfills. Though New Mexico doesn’t have a specific law regarding electronics dumping, it is important to note that we do not accept electronics within our dumpsters.
  • Household paint – Paints, stains, strippers and other solvents all need to be handled with care. Because these liquids leach into ground water, it is imperative that you dispose of them properly.
  • Used Batteries – Usually containing mercury, batteries of all types and sizes are banned from most landfills. Research your opportunities for recycling when looking to get rid of used batteries.
  • Automotive fluids and waste – Used oil, coolant and transmission fluids are all very toxic and can contaminate local ground water and other resources. Find out from local authorities how to dispose of them properly.

A good rule of thumb regarding proper waste disposal is that if it is not of an organic base and contains chemicals, it is best to keep it out of your dumpster and call local waste management companies for proper advice on disposal.
